What Pinterest does

In April 2025 Pinterest announced “AI modified” labels for Pins. The label appears in the corner of an image when Pinterest detects that it was generated or edited with AI, using metadata written by generators and editors alongside Pinterest’s own classifiers. Pinterest also lets people choose to see fewer AI Pins in categories such as beauty and art, which reduces the reach of labeled content.

Metadata Pinterest can read

  • IPTC digital source type in the XMP block, written by Adobe apps, Midjourney and Google tools.
  • C2PA Content Credentials from DALL-E, Firefly, Microsoft Designer and Photoshop.
  • Software and description fields that name a generator or contain a prompt, which the checker here flags as generator traces.

Clean before you Pin

  1. Check the file

Drop the image into the tool below. It reads the C2PA manifest, IPTC digital source type and generator traces and tells you which signal Pinterest would act on.

  2. Strip or re-encode

Strip metadata keeps the pixels untouched. Re-encode writes a fresh JPEG or WebP with an optional 3% shrink when you also want new pixels.

  3. Upload the clean copy

Download the cleaned file and post that one. Do not re-open it in an editor that writes Content Credentials, or the record comes back.

The classifier caveat

Pinterest explicitly says it also uses classifiers, so an image with the typical look of a generator can be labeled without any metadata at all. Removing metadata prevents the most reliable trigger and fixes real photos that were labeled after a small AI edit. It does not disable Pinterest’s visual detection.

Questions people ask

Can I appeal an AI modified label on Pinterest?

Pinterest offers a way to report an incorrect label on a Pin. Cleaning the file and re-pinning is usually faster when the cause was metadata.

Does the label hurt distribution?

Labeled Pins are hidden from people who chose to see fewer AI Pins in certain categories, so reach can drop for that audience.

Does Pinterest strip metadata?

Published Pins are re-encoded, but Pinterest reads the original at upload. Remove metadata before uploading if you want it out of the decision.
