What LinkedIn shows
Since May 2024 LinkedIn, a C2PA member, preserves Content Credentials on uploaded images and shows a CR icon in the corner. The panel behind it lists the app that produced the file, the actions taken and whether generative AI was used. It is not an “AI label” as such: a photo straight from a Leica M11-P gets the icon too. But when the manifest records Firefly, DALL-E or Generative Fill, the panel says so.
Why marketers remove it
- The icon draws attention to tooling rather than to the message, especially on ad creatives and carousel slides.
- The panel can reveal the exact software versions and editing steps behind a campaign image.
- Reviewers have reported inconsistent behavior: the same file badged on one surface and not on another.
Publish without the badge
Check the file
Drop the image into the tool below. It reads the C2PA manifest, IPTC digital source type and generator traces and tells you which signal LinkedIn would act on.
Strip or re-encode
Strip metadata keeps the pixels untouched. Re-encode writes a fresh JPEG or WebP with an optional 3% shrink when you also want new pixels.
Upload the clean copy
Download the cleaned file and post that one. Do not re-open it in an editor that writes Content Credentials, or the record comes back.
Keep it when it helps
Content Credentials were designed to build trust. Photojournalists, brands that want to prove authenticity and creators who want credit may prefer to keep them. Strip them when the badge misrepresents the work, when privacy matters, or when the file will be reused where the credential no longer applies.
Questions people ask
Does the CR icon mean the image is AI?
No. It means the file carries a C2PA manifest. The manifest may record a camera capture, a Photoshop edit or an AI generation; open the panel to see which.
Will LinkedIn keep my EXIF data?
LinkedIn strips ordinary EXIF but preserves C2PA. Removing both with the tool above is the safest option for privacy.
Can I keep the credential but hide AI use?
No. The manifest is signed as a whole; editing it invalidates the signature. Either keep the record as is or remove it entirely.
